Capture2Text Tray Icon Missing: Quick Fix

Capture2Text is running but you cannot find its icon? Work through these steps — the fix is usually the hidden-icons arrow.

Step 1: Check the Hidden Icons Arrow

This is the official answer from the Capture2Text documentation‘s FAQ: the icon is probably in the hidden-icons area. Look at the bottom-right of your screen, next to the clock, and click the “Show hidden icons” button (it looks like an upward triangle or a ^ character). The Capture2Text icon should be in the panel that pops up. If you want it always visible, drag it from that panel onto the taskbar.

Step 2: Right-Click, Don’t Left-Click

Another official FAQ point: clicking the tray icon with the left mouse button does nothing. Right-click the icon to open the menu with OCR Language, Settings, and Exit. If “nothing happens when I click the icon,” this is almost certainly why.

Step 3: Make Sure It Is Actually Running

If the icon is not in the hidden panel either, Capture2Text may have closed or crashed:

  1. Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc to open Task Manager and look for Capture2Text.exe under Background processes.
  2. If it is there but has no icon, end the task and start it fresh.
  3. If it is not there, re-launch it by double-clicking Capture2Text.exe in its folder. (First launch? See our installation guide — including the MSVCP140.dll fix if you get a DLL error.)

Step 4: Try Running as Administrator

On some systems, especially with strict security software, the tray icon fails to register unless the program runs elevated. Right-click Capture2Text.exe > Run as administrator and check whether the icon appears. If it does, open Properties > Compatibility and check “Run this program as an administrator” to make it permanent.

Step 5: Restart Windows Explorer

Sometimes Explorer itself loses track of tray icons after a crash or a long uptime. This is generic Windows troubleshooting, not Capture2Text-specific:

  1. Open Task Manager (Ctrl + Shift + Esc).
  2. Find Windows Explorer under Processes, right-click it, and choose Restart.
  3. Your taskbar will briefly disappear and come back — check whether the Capture2Text icon is there now.

If nothing above works, a full reboot clears the remaining edge cases (stuck notification-area cache, a wedged Explorer process).

Still no icon after a reboot? Your antivirus may be blocking or quarantining the executable — the official docs list antivirus interference as a standard troubleshooting step. Whitelist the Capture2Text folder, re-extract the zip, and launch again.

FAQ

Where is the Capture2Text tray icon?

Click the “Show hidden icons” arrow (^) in the bottom-right corner next to the clock. The icon is usually there. Drag it onto the taskbar to keep it visible.

I clicked the tray icon and nothing happens.

Right-click it instead of left-clicking. The left click intentionally does nothing; the menu opens on right-click.

The icon disappears after a while. Why?

Windows sometimes drops tray icons when Explorer glitches. Restarting Windows Explorer from Task Manager usually brings it back. Running Capture2Text as administrator also helps on locked-down systems.
