Black Screen Fix: Capture2Text in Fullscreen Games

Capturing text from a game gives you a black box? Here is why it happens and the windowed-mode workaround that fixes it.

The Problem

You press Win + Q while a game is running, draw the capture box over some dialogue or menu text, and the OCR result is empty — the captured preview is just a black rectangle. The same hotkey works fine on your browser and desktop apps, so Capture2Text itself is not broken.

Why It Happens: Exclusive Fullscreen Is a Known Limitation

Honestly: games running in exclusive fullscreen mode (the “Fullscreen” option, as opposed to “Windowed” or “Borderless”) render through a direct DirectX/OpenGL path that bypasses the normal Windows screen surface. Most screen-capture tools — Capture2Text included — read from the standard desktop surface, so they see a black frame where the game is actually drawing.

This is not a Capture2Text bug and not something a setting inside Capture2Text can fix. It is a well-known limitation of screen-capture OCR tools in general: if the pixels never pass through the composited desktop, there is nothing to capture. The same thing happens with basic screenshot tools on some titles.

The Fix: Switch the Game to Windowed or Borderless Mode

When a game runs windowed, its frames go through the normal desktop compositor and Capture2Text can see them. Borderless windowed (sometimes called “Fullscreen Windowed” or “Borderless”) looks identical to fullscreen on screen but captures perfectly.

  1. Open the game’s Settings / Options > Graphics / Display.
  2. Find Display Mode (or Screen Mode) and change it from Fullscreen to Borderless Windowed (first choice) or Windowed.
  3. Apply the change. The game should now fill the screen exactly as before.
  4. Alt-Tab out, position your mouse over the in-game text, and press Win + Q (or use Win + E for a quick Text Line capture).

For dialogue-heavy games — visual novels, JRPGs, untranslated indie titles — Win + E (Text Line OCR) is the fastest workflow: hover near the dialogue line, press the hotkey, and Capture2Text outlines and OCRs that line automatically.

Tips for Game Text Capture

  • Pause first. Dialogue that advances on a timer can disappear mid-capture. Pause the game or wait for a static menu screen.
  • Crank the game’s text/UI scale up if it offers one — larger glyphs OCR far more reliably.
  • Use the right OCR language. For Japanese games, install the Japanese dictionary (jpn) and set text direction with Win + O (Auto usually picks vertical vs. horizontal correctly). See our Japanese OCR guide.
  • Enable translation in Settings > Translate if you want the OCR result translated automatically (needs an internet connection — Google Translate is used under the hood).
What about games with no borderless option? A few older titles only offer exclusive fullscreen or windowed. Use Windowed mode and maximize the window — it is not quite as pretty, but capture works. Some players also run the game windowed on a second monitor while keeping notes or a dictionary on the first.
Honest note: the official Capture2Text documentation does not discuss game capture at all — the limitation and the windowed-mode workaround above are standard screen-capture behavior documented across the wider screen-capture/OCR community. Capture2Text is a desktop utility first; for real-time translation workflows see our game translation OCR guide.

Quick Recap

  • Black capture in a game? → The game is in exclusive fullscreen; switch to Borderless Windowed.
  • Fastest dialogue capture? → Win + E (Text Line OCR) on the dialogue line.
  • Foreign-language game? → Install the right OCR dictionary and enable Translate.

FAQ

Why does Capture2Text capture a black screen in games?

Games in exclusive fullscreen mode render directly through DirectX/OpenGL, bypassing the desktop surface that screen-capture tools read from. Switch the game to Borderless Windowed or Windowed mode so its frames go through the normal compositor.

Is there a Capture2Text setting to fix black game captures?

No. The limitation is at the display level, not in Capture2Text’s settings. The only reliable fix is changing the game’s display mode.

Does borderless windowed mode hurt game performance?

Slightly, on some titles — the compositor adds a small overhead. On modern hardware the difference is usually negligible, and it is the standard setup for anyone capturing or streaming games.

Can I use Capture2Text to translate game dialogue in real time?

Yes: run the game in borderless windowed mode, set the OCR language to the game’s language, and enable Settings > Translate (internet required). See our game translation OCR guide for the full workflow.
