Japanese learners have a name for their favorite study method: sentence mining — pulling real sentences out of manga, games, and shows, and turning them into Anki flashcards. The bottleneck was always typing. Capture2Text — the free, open-source (GPLv3), portable Windows OCR tool by Christopher Brochtrup — removes it: press Win+Q, drag over the sentence, and the text lands in your clipboard, ready to paste into Anki.

Grab the tool from the download page (v4.6.3, 2022-03-19 — no installation, runs from a folder). Japanese is one of the built-in OCR languages, so there is nothing extra to download. New to the tool? Skim the installation and setup guide first.

One-time setup (5 minutes)

  1. Set the OCR language to Japanese. Right-click the Capture2Text tray icon → OCR Language → Japanese.
  2. Send output to the clipboard. Settings → Output → check “Copy OCR text to clipboard”. This is the whole trick: every capture becomes one paste away from Anki.
  3. Confirm the hotkey. The default is Win+Q for forward text capture. Change it under Settings → Hotkeys if it clashes with a game or reader.

The mining loop

  1. Read until you hit an unknown word — a manga panel, a visual-novel line, a game dialogue box, anything on screen.
  2. Press Win+Q and drag over the sentence containing the word. On release, Capture2Text OCRs it and copies the text to your clipboard.
  3. Paste into a new Anki card (Ctrl+N in Anki). Put the full sentence on the front, with the unknown word marked.
  4. Add the meaning on the back. Use Capture2Text’s built-in translate feature (needs internet — it goes through Google Translate), or paste a definition from your dictionary of choice. Many learners pair this loop with the Yomitan browser dictionary — see our Capture2Text vs Yomitan comparison to pick the right setup for your study style.
  5. Review. Anki’s spaced repetition handles the rest.

Once the loop is muscle memory, a card takes under 30 seconds — which is exactly why people stick with mining instead of pre-made decks: every card came from something you actually wanted to read.

Bubble OCR: read full sentences in place

When you want to read a whole sentence rather than card it, switch to Bubble OCR mode: capture the text bubble or dialogue box and the result appears in a small on-screen bubble, so you keep reading without switching windows. It is the fastest way to get through a manga chapter or a VN scene when you only need a rough understanding — and you can still Win+Q anything worth mining.

Honest accuracy notes

  • Clean digital text works best. Typeset manga, game UIs, and subtitles OCR almost perfectly. Stylized or hand-lettered fonts (shouty sound effects, fancy titles) are much harder — screenshot those and type them if needed.
  • Furigana can confuse the OCR. Tiny ruby text above kanji sometimes gets merged into the line. Zoom the page in your reader before capturing; bigger glyphs, fewer errors.
  • Vertical text is hit-or-miss. Test with your own manga — some pages work, some don’t. For vertical-heavy series, expect to correct captures more often.

Tools help you read — courses help you learn. Capture2Text gets the Japanese off your screen and into Anki, but grammar and listening need structured teaching. If you want a guided path alongside your mining, browse Japanese courses on Udemy and pick one that matches your level.

FAQ

Do I need to download a Japanese language pack for Capture2Text?

No. Japanese is one of the seven languages built into the Capture2Text download (alongside English, French, German, Korean, Russian, and Spanish). Just select Japanese from the tray icon’s OCR Language menu — no extra download needed.

Can Capture2Text send captured text directly into Anki?

There is no direct Anki integration. The workflow is: enable “Copy OCR text to clipboard” in Capture2Text’s output settings, capture with Win+Q, then paste into a new Anki card with Ctrl+N. In practice this takes seconds per card.

Does OCR work on manga scans?

Clean, typeset manga text works very well. Stylized or hand-lettered fonts — big sound effects, decorative titles — are much harder for any OCR engine. Zooming the page before capturing and using tight selection boxes improves accuracy noticeably.

Does Capture2Text translation work offline?

No. Capture2Text’s OCR works fully offline, but the translate feature sends text through Google Translate, which requires an internet connection.

What is Bubble OCR mode?

Bubble OCR mode shows the captured text in a small on-screen bubble near your cursor instead of copying it silently. It is ideal for reading full sentences in context — manga dialogue or game text — without switching windows.
